Album Title: Timeline, Model: Fifi Chen, Photographer: Edwin Setiawan (me), Place: 仁愛路口附近 (read: ren ai lu kou fu jin), Date: 2012/01/08. I remember that some people say that I recently only shoot the model about her face or maybe half body (instead of shooting full body), and some others say about good portrait just because of good bokeh (that means very expensive lens) . Actually I just want to say that because I use my tele lens so it’s not easy to get full body shot (I need to notice that I shoot with many people, sometimes 6 to 10 people so if I want to shoot full body I have checked that I need about 14-17 meter and I just feel not good for other photographers). And about good portrait just because of good bokeh, that’s one is not correct – if you see my portfolio I always notice about the composition at the first critical factor. I know that good bokeh can help to pop out the model, but for some cases I prefer to shoot the model with the environment (not make the background disappear). Well, you can see this album ~ I think I have shot with different composition (compare with my photos recently).

This album is totally different than my album recently, I simply like this album because it is unique. The place is just common place, like old mansion, market, school, etc. Because of that then I decided not to shoot only the person/model.

Anyway, recently some people just asking me the typical/same question about which lens I have used for shooting, usually in order to produce smooth bokeh. Well, I agree that gear does matter but why see the good portrait photos just because of good/smooth bokeh. There are many important things in order to produce good portrait photos, and I think it’s better if someone asking me from photographer aspect such as composition, framing, lighting, etc. Those aspect can be learned and shared to other people too.

I think there are too many headshot or half body photos for this album, simply just because I use tele lens so it’s not easy to shoot full body portrait. For this session, the weather was not so good so for some places I really need to use high ISO to maintain the shutter speed. My lens have IS (image stabilizer) but sometimes the model moves so I need to make sure that shutter speed is enough to freeze her movement. Well, I really like this album ~ also the model, she is beautiful but in my opinion she is too active haha… (I usually only shoot once or two shots ~ I like to think the frame, composition, pose, etc before I shoot ~ so sometimes I need to arrange her pose and say to hold the pose for few seconds haha….).

As usual I create calendar for the next year, year 2012. A little bit different with previous year, I try to create desktop calendar. For this one, I use my photographs that have been taken during 2011 (so every photos are quite new and different model for each month). In order to speed up finishing this calendar I just use calendar grid template from this link (you also can download it for free and create new calendar by yourself). The same as previous year, I can’t create one universal calendar for all countries in the world (because different nation will have different holiday), so I just make Sunday as a public holiday. I also don’t want to crop or change the proportion of my photos (so I use 3:2 for width-height proportion) and keep the size as 1024 px * 683 px.

Honestly I have 2 different photo sessions for Christmas theme ~ but I just upload this one because it seems better.. (although it’s not really perfect especially for some similar composition ~ and maybe harsh light…).
