Skin Color Correction Using Photoshop CS 2 or CS 3

with 16 comments

Have you ever take photo in dark room which light is very limited ? maybe you will get blur photo (if you don’t use flash) because your shutter speed is very slow (ex: 1/10s) and your hand can’t hold the camera within 1/10s. In order to solve this problem maybe you use flash or use studio light (if you take photo in studio) – these methods maybe solve blur problem but how do you think about the color ? As I know, when we use flash the color maybe a little bit different than original (without using flash) because of lighting effect. For potrait photo, I think the most important about the color is skin color – so in this tutorial I try to write my technique to correct skin color.

Original photo is taken by Albert Jou – I like his photos especially potrait and landscape photos – you can check his link here. Original photo can be seen below (small size), for original size please click this link.

My simple step to correct skin color:

1. Open original photo

2. Make level adjustment layer to reduce over exposure part in upper left part, you can change input level until you feel okey with the result,  in this example I change input level become 0-0,7-255. After that apply gradient masking because this level adjustment only to correct over exposure part.

Add level adjustment layer with input level 0-0,7-255:

level1-1

Apply gradient mask:

level1-2

3. Make level adjustment layer to correct under exposure part in bottom right part, you can change input level until you feel okey with the result, in this example I change input level become 0-1,8-255. After that apply gradient masking because this level adjustment only to correct under exposure part.

Add level adjustment layer with input level 0-1,8-255:

level2-1

Apply gradient mask:

level2-2

Step 2 and 3 actually just correcting over exposure and under exposure part – I also  use similar technique (step 2 and 3) for my other tutorial to correct over exposure and under exposure in landscape photography.

4. Make curve adjustment layer to correct skin color, you can see my previous tutorial about colorization using photoshop cs 2 or cs 3 – jump to step 4. If you read that tutorial you’ll know that you need to change the curve in 4 channels (RGB,red, green, blue). Different photo should have different curve – in this case feeling is important.

Add curve adjustment layer:

curve1-1

Reduce layer opacity to 60%:

curve

Make a mask (this curve only for skin – not the environment):

mask

5. Make photo filter adjustment layer and choose warming filter (LBA) with density 25% – you can change the number until you satisfied with it. Later you can control opacity to reduce the effect and make a mask because this adjustment layer only for skin.

Add photo filter adjustment layer (LBA 25%):

lba1-1

Reduce layer opacity to 60%:

lba1-2

Apply the same mask with step 4:

lba1-3

5. Add local contrast by using unsharp mask. First click ctrl+shift+alt+E to merge all layers – then use Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask. In unsharp mask dialog box: use small amount and big radius for example: amount:10 and radius:200. Same with step 3 and 4, adjust opacity and make a mask to cover some parts.

Add local contrast:

Finally we finish this tutorial – hope you like it. Comments, critiques, suggestions are welcome.

  10. @awob:

“After that apply gradient masking because this level adjustment only to correct under exposure part.”
    mohon bimbingannya,
    thx, salam..

  14. @aldio:

    semoga gak makin bingung hehe….
